GM Suspends Night Shift in Mexico
The director of
the Mexican federation of workers, Hugo Varela Flores, confirmed that the General
Motors Plant located in the city of Silao, Gunajuato in Mexico has suspended
its night shift, plus a series of technical stoppages.
This is due to the low demand in the market, when asked about the current situation
that the plant is going through, he stated that there is no short terms plans
to reinstate the night shift, even though the Silao Plant has been one of the
least affected by the current crisis that GM is experiencing world wide.
The first technical stoppage will be done in March, the second one in June,
a third one in October and the last one in December.
Varela mentioned that these operational stops are used for maintenance and
adjustments in production.
In 2008, GM Mexico performed 6 technical stoppages plus cut 600 jobs this represented
15% of the total work force.
The Silao plant has reduced its production lines from 47 to 40 units per our.
This plant manufactures the Suburban, Silverado, C-3500, Tahoe and Yukon models.
